The Hero's Journey
In the last unit of my Stories class, Journeys, I learned about the steps that are in the journey of a hero and the ones that make it up. For my action project, I was assigned to analyze a fictional character and interview a real person in my life. I created a slideshow presenting the steps that I was able to identify in the fictional character's journey. In addition, I created a transcript of my interview with my real life hero. I found that picking the fictional hero came easily to me because of how profound the book, The Giver, was to me. I enjoyed reading the book and felt that it was very easy for me to identify the steps in the hero's journey. As I identified the steps, I found myself realizing certain details that I hadn't noticed before. While putting this project together, I found myself having a difficult time putting the information into a slideshow that can be presented and understood clearly. I am proud of how I was able to accomplish this task and represent the hero's journey successfully. At first, I didn't understand how and what the journey is like to become a hero. Now, I have a great respect for the process and appreciate the heroes we have today.
The two people who I decided to choose for this project was Jonas from The Giver, which is my fictional hero and my close family friend AA, who is my real hero. I chose Jonas from The Give because he is very brave and courageous. Despite him being young, he does a very mature act and is his actions displayed who he really was on the inside. In the end, he found himself alone but is reborn without the limitations that he was presented in the first place. He became victorious at the end and setting the emotions and memories free for the people. I decided to choose my close family friend AA because of what she had to go through in order to raise her children. Just like Jonas, she was a person who was a hard worker and knew that in order to accomplish something much greater than her she needed to be brave and become non-selfish. Both people were very scared and did not know what would come out of it but headed into their challenges straight on. They both went through many challenges but have overcome those challenges and have transformed as people.
Below is the slideshow that I have created displaying Jonas's journey into becoming a hero. This presentation contains 8 steps of The Call to Adventure, Mentor, Crossing the threshold, Trials, Infinite Despair, Atonement, and The Return.
