A Raisin in the Sun Chorus
In my third and final unit, Matriarch, I read A Raisin in the Sun, which gave me a better understanding
of how race, class, and gender affected society in the 1950s. Along with that, I studied the different tactics

of how race, class, and gender affected society in the 1950s. Along with that, I studied the different tactics
that were practiced to have segregation in the 1950s such as blockbusting, projects, sundown towns,
and gentrification. While reading the play, I discovered the term, Matriarch, which was new to me and
found that it meant, a woman or older woman who is powerful and the leader or head of a family.
Within the unit, I conducted an investigation that allowed me to see today’s society opinion on
whether a woman should pursue their dreams, even though it might affect her family and friends?
I found that the majority of people said yes to this question and learned so much from this investigation.
For my action project, I was tasked to write a script for a chorus to comment on a specific scene from
A Raisin in the Sun. Through the chorus, I was able to comment on the positive qualities, the downfall of the characters, and a lesson to take from the characters Mama, Beneatha, and Walter. In addition, I addressed the concepts of blockbusting, gentrification, and assimilation and within my commentary, I added the perspective of the community that I interviewed. I felt that the most challenging aspect of this action project was creating commentary that was interesting and had a meaning. However, I felt I had the most success in formatting my project to effectively communicate the information. Overall, I enjoyed the course and am happy with my project.
