Preventative Disease Patient Profile

In the last unit of my STEAM course, Cure, I learned about the revolution that happened in Western medicine with the discovery of vaccines, turning medicine to the direction of prevention. In addition, I studied the information on nutrition labels and was able to discover the meaning behind the “Percent Daily Values”, sugars, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and minerals, and how they perform within the body. I was able to see how a doctor conducts a consultation with a patient and understand the difference between a good and bad consultation. I also learned and experienced alternative methods to medicine such as yoga and aromatherapy. The experience was relaxing and opened my mind to something that I would have never thought as something I liked. I learned that these methods can prevent diabetes, which was interesting in seeing how these methods affect the brain and the body. For my final action project, I was tasked to take on the role of a doctor and write a fictional preventative patient profile. I had to write about their medical history, family history, diet, daily life habits, and suggestions on how to prevent getting diabetes. I felt that the most challenging part was being able to gather the information to give the most useful and practical advice to the fictional patient. However, I did have success in being able to format the information in a way that effectively communicates it to the reader. Overall, I enjoyed the course and the action project.
